Richmond Christian quarterback Stephen Swiney has committed to play football at Bluefield College.
In his senior year at Richmond Christian, Swiney broke the single game and season passing yard school record, with over 2500 passing yards and 20 TDs, while leading them to the state semifinals. He was also selected to second team all state and the all academic team.
When asked why he decided to go to Bluefield, Swiney replied, “My favorite part was the coaches. All of the coaches were excited for me to visit and treated all of us so well and I felt that it was one big family there. The head coach, Coach Lusk was one of the more genuine and caring people I have met and felt like him and his staff really wanted me and that I would fit in perfectly there.”
He continued by saying, “I enjoyed the small town feel and the surrounding area. Felt I could be a difference maker and turn the program around.”
Richmond Christian head coach Carlton Harris explained that, “He was a great player, very good leader on and off the field.” When asked about his potential at Bluefield, Carlton answered, “Like any players he has certain aspects of his game that will need to improve but he is very smart I think that will be his biggest strong point at the college level.”
Bluefield College is a private school in Bluefield, Virginia that plays in the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference for football. The football program rebooted after a long absence in 2011, and began replaying in 2012. Last season, the team finished with a record of 1-10. With the addition of Swiney and several other players from around the area, the program is likely to take a turn towards success.
